One of the overlooked topics in the field of Iranian social history studies is the examination of health and medical measures among different age groups, especially children. Accordingly, this study aims to answer the question: What strategies were employed for preserving children’s health and what methods were used to treat various childhood illnesses in Safavid-era Iran?
This is an interdisciplinary study at the intersection of history and medicine. In line with the nature of the topic, the required data and information were collected using a library-based method, especially through the examination of various sources, with particular emphasis on medical manuscripts. The presentation of the findings follows a descriptive-analytical format.
The results of this research reveal that, unlike historical sources and travelogues, medical texts provide interesting insights about children during the Safavid period. Based on the medical system rooted in the theory of the four humors, both cognitive (etiological) and behavioral (preventive and therapeutic) approaches were used to address various illnesses. Due to the physical vulnerability of children at birth, observing protective and hygienic measures played a significant role in preserving their health. Children's bodies were susceptible to various illnesses, and preventive strategies were strongly recommended. Depending on the type of illness, the child's physical condition, and age, various medications were prescribed—mostly for external use and in different forms.
Given today's need for greater awareness of children's health and hygiene practices, identifying and explaining the views of physicians from historical periods can offer valuable and practical insights.
